It’s okay to cry

Crying is ugly. Crying is loud. Crying is wet. Crying is seen as an undesirable act, especially in public.

So, what do we do? We hold our emotions in and suck it up.

Maybe we wait to cry in private, in an isolated place where we won’t disturb anyone else. Maybe we have trained ourself not to cry at all, stuffing down our emotions so far we can’t even reach them any more.

Yet, crying is very helpful in emotional regulation. Think happy response, tears release oxytocin and endorphins which are known as the “feel good” chemicals.

By crying, the oxytocin and endorphins eases physical and emotional pain. Crying soothes you and helps you relax. It’s science. Crying is good for you.

So, don’t hold it back because everybody cries!
