A Vision for the Future

You’ve heard it every year… New Year, New You! But why is it that we have to change because the calendar does? It’s time that we start changing on our own schedule.

Change is important for growth. When we don’t change, we don’t grow. When we stop growing, that’s when things start getting icky. Grow indicates forward movement & that should be the goal of every person – to be a better version of you!

However, if you have ever made a resolution, you know that they don’t always work. Actually, they rarely do! So, do we just give up? Do we just hold our hands in the air & say “this growth this is just too hard?” No. But it’s important to know how to make real, meaningful change in your life.

This requires one crucial thing… DRIVE!

When you are driven to do something, you are more likely to accomplish that thing. Your drive isn’t simple but it is easy to discover because is it your why – why is a powerful word here.

How do you discover your “why”? The first step is to come up with goals that align with your values & reflect your beliefs. Making a successful goal takes a couple of steps.

First – Brainstorming: come up with as many ideas as you can for things that you want in life or want to change in your life.

Second – Organize: sort through all of those ideas & see which ones can be grouped together into one goal.

Third – Prioritize: give each idea a number indicating how important it is or if it needs to be accomplished first to make room for bigger & better things.

Fourth – Re-write your goal: by using the SMART goal format you can create manageable goal that is written to be accomplished!

Once you have 2 or 3 goals for the year, you can start thinking about why you want this things to happen. Finding out you reason is vital! You need to understand why you want these things in your life, in order to achieve them.

Staying motivated can be impossible without your “why” because without a reason for doing something, we lose interest quickly. Writing your why down gives you something to look back on & get that motivation back.

When you think about it, it makes sense that resolutions/goals don’t work without having a reason for making that change. But, how do you figure out why you want something. It might be easy for some goals, but not easy for others.

By asking yourself why repeatedly until you get to that ultimate reason behind the goal does not happen on its own. You must ask yourself the hard questions. Then, remember to write it down. Make it personal. I mean very personal, the more you put yourself into your why, the more it will motivate you to accomplish that goal.

So, before you make any resolutions or goals for 2022, make sure that they have a well thought out & written reasons behind each goal. That reason will be the difference between making a resolution that falls off after a few months or weeks & making a goal that you complete!
