Thought Diving & The Sea of Paper

Do you ever have so many thoughts in your mind that you get overwhelmed? I do. But when the thoughts are vast, I cast my anchor & dive in.

I find that challenging myself to a session of free writing often helps with the thought overload. The process of thought dumping or journaling through free writing is relatively new to me. But over the last year, I have used it more & more.

My normal process of journaling was free writing but more in a autobiographical way. I would also use writing prompts or themes to unload what’s on my mind. Then there were my many lists (I do love a list). But I struggled with thought dumping and my free writing was often kind of shallow.

Auto-editing is a serious hurtle to overcome while free writing especially for thought dumping. When free writing try to stop yourself from crossing things out or fixing a spelling or grammar error. Be kind to yourself if you mess up & just keep going!

Remember this isn’t for your 10th grade English class or something you are having published. This is your ocean of possibilities. This isn’t easy for everyone. But the point of this exercise is to thought dump, not to create a masterpiece.

How do you start?

I usually start with the date. But then I slip into autopilot & connect my brain to my pen. You can use a keyboard, voice recorder or video recorder, but for me there is something cathartic about writing your thoughts out on a piece of paper.

Most sentences will begin with yourself as the subject. This is good. Focus on your feelings. Your emotions want to surface & often we are forced to compartmentalize. This is how we unload those thoughts, feelings, & emotions, by dumping out our words.

You can find peace & tranquility in the aftermath of a thought dump & free writing session because your mind had a chance to unload & reset. It is important to clear your mind often, to prevent the build up of thoughts, feelings, & emotions.

You don’t want a thought storm on your hands. So, protect your peace & get those thoughts out. Clear your mind so you can find clarity.
