Autumn Leaves

Change is in the air. It’s Autumn is the US. As you see the leaves changing, it’s a good time to think of the changes you can make to live a happier & healthier life.

What do you want to change?

It is inevitable to want change in your life. But the most important part is to know how & what you want to change. Dig deep & find something that you would like to improve in your life.

Here are a few examples: wake up earlier to set your intentions for the day, drink more water, stop eating after 8pm, journal every day, exercise 3 times a week, spend time reflecting on your day each evening, & the list goes on.

Digging deep…

Meditation is a good way to clear your mind & prepare yourself for this. Five minutes is all you need to sit with yourself & center yourself for the process.

Set a timer (there is a great free app named Insight Timer for this purpose), close your eyes & let your mind go. Don’t focus on your thoughts but let them come & go. Don’t get stuck, acknowledge the thought and file it away. The idea is to go through each thought & then let it go, clearing your mind.

When you do this, quiet the world around you as best as you can. Turn the TV or music off. Listen to the silence or a calming sound. You can find calming music (without lyrics) on YouTube by searching for “music for meditation” or download a free app like Calm to help block out the very busy & very distracting world around you.

Find the quiet place in your mind by listening to your breath. Whenever you find yourself focusing on something too long, start counting your breaths until that thought can be filed away. Pay attention to the thoughts as they come & go. Do you notice a pattern? Is there a specific thing bothering you?

It’s time for a brainstorm.

Brainstorming is the next part of digging deep. Once your timer goes off, have a pen & paper ready. Start writing about the thought patterns you noticed. I like to do this in a list.

Are you focusing on finances & something that you need, your body image or a relationship that needs work? Whatever it is, write it down!

There are no wrong answers when brainstorming. So, go-to-town writing everything that pops into your head as you think about change. Even if it’s absurd, like traveling to Mars or having a genie in a lamp, write it down.

Now comes the homework…

Now that you have covered both sides of the paper (or you write just a half dozen things down), you can choose a few things that are most important to you. Choosing your target goals is the next step, after clearing your mind.

Visionboards are a great way to display the things you want to accomplish or change about yourself.

Above is my most recent visionboard. I want to accomplish so many things. By having them represented visually, I can get the whole picture every time I glance at my board.

Find some images, quotes, & affirmations that you would like to include to motivate yourself for change. I used images I found online & printed, but you can draw, clip magazine pictures, or simply write out the thing you desire most in life.

This are not the time to think of your 10 year plan, but cover the goals of the near future. Think of little goals & big ones, too. Then, start setting your intentions each day to do the things necessary to achieve those goals

Once your finish with the few goals from the brainstorming exercise, fill the rest of the space with quotes and positive affirmations.

Time to fly high.

Now is the time to start putting your changes into practice. You should be doing something everyday to accomplish these goals. It can be something as small as sending a text to the person that you want a better relationship with or skipping your morning coffee from your favorite coffee shop in order to get your dream house.

The important thing here is to work at your changes. You can make dozens of visionboards, but if you don’t put the work in, you won’t see results. You can’t win the lotto if you don’t play.
